2016 was an exciting year for me. I finally graduated from one of my masters at university, I finally married the love of my life and I finally started a new exciting job at a prestigious company. Starting to work at a new, unfamiliar place always comes hand in hand with getting to know many new people which are curious about a non-Asian girl with an obvious Asian name.

Being open-minded and straight forward surely helps to adjust to a new environment fast and it also helps to bond with new colleagues in only a few days of time. I am glad that I am able to adjust to new a new environment fast and that I am able to say that all of my colleagues are nice, competent and all the more open-minded people. Nonetheless, I had quite a few strange encounters with my new working family. I started my new work-life with my new name – Wong – and therefore questions about my not-at-all-matching-my-Asian-name appearance astonished some my new co-workers.

In the first weeks of my new work-life quite a few questions came up which inspired me to a new series here on my blog which I want to introduce to you today: “My ‘Chinese’ life in awesome charts”. I recorded quite a number of questions I got asked the last few months which I will try to answer (with a bit of sarcasm* and a little wink) here on my blog.

*Depending on the attitude of the person asking I answered my given examples for real.

So, why did maniac me marry a Hong Konger? Well of course I wanted to be perfectly prepared when China takes over world supremacy. While most of my fellow Austrian will be enslaved while I will be standing in the first row to watch everything. Also I was too lazy to find an Austrian guy… but it was cheaper to order a Chinese guy anyway as there is an obvious surplus of men because of China’s one-child policy. Of course I did not marry him because I love him… ridiculous!

Have you ever been asked the same question? What do you answer?

Your answers are hilarious. I wish I’d thought of those.

    Here are some of mine:

    1) He can dance.
    2) He can cook
    3) Because I wanted my new father-in-law to call every week and yell, “Where’s my grandson?” at me.
